The essential guide to choosing a smartphone

In today’s world, the smartphone has become the technology that can keep one connected to one’s family and friends whether they are in the house down the road or on the other side of the world. You can be informed of local community groups’ events as well as international news. Here are a few ways how the smartphone can work for you.

Being connected: Smartphones allow you to call, send a text message, do a video chat or even send an email.

Being informed: You can read the news, watch a video, look for a recipe or do an online search on a specific topic.

Being involved: You could be part of a community project or a social club and communicate with the groups via apps such as Messenger or WhatsApp

Being safe: With a touch of a button or app (application) you could get assistance and help during an emergency.

Being entertained: With social media on the rise with platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Netflix etc, there are endless ways of being entertained on your smartphone.

When choosing the right phone for your needs, there are a few things to look at.

What are your needs: You need to ask one or two questions to see what your needs or requirements are. Do you need a smartphone mainly for calling and sending messages? Do you need a smartphone for work, hobbies, taking photographs etc?

The budget: Determining a price range. Many of the budget-level smartphones are more than adequate for most users but some people may need something with more capabilities like scheduling or taking notes which are more in line with premium-level smartphones. Something else to consider in the budget is whether to have “pay-as-you-go” for your airtime and data or to take out a contract which may be a two or three-year commitment.

The size: Some smartphones have larger screens than others resulting in options for larger text display as an example along with more space to display images and videos etc. Other smartphones are smaller and foldable so that they take up less space. Newer foldable smartphones are also able to open up lengthwise, giving an almost iPad or tablet size and feel.

Battery life: Look for phones that have good battery life. This means more use with less charging. If you are getting a phone to call and send a short text only, you may be able to get a phone that is less “smart” but that will last for 5 days before needing to be charged. But if you are a “heavy user” of a smartphone and use it for almost everything, the battery may last only a few hours a day.

Before you buy: Read reviews, talk to a trusted friend, get brochures from suppliers and make an informed decision on the smartphone you are about to buy. The last thing you want is smartphone on a three year contract that you are not happy with that either has too much or too little functionality to suit your needs.
